Laughing Buddha

Laughing Buddha

I was thinking, why does Buddha which represents mind, body and spirit has a round puffy belly. A friend send me a link to laughing Buddha and I got a interesting answer… Apparently the image is based on a wandering Chinese monk, Budai (Hotei, in Japanese). He lived centuries ago and is believed to be Maitreya, or the Buddha to come.

Besides rubbing Buddha’s belly for good luck, the round plump figure represents contentment, magnanimity plenitude and TOLERANCE!
